Travian Plus, have you any gold, buying the end game

Filed under: Travian, MMPORG, Resource Management — Justin @ 4:17 pm

Having “battled” through a Travian sever I am well aware of just how competitive it can get as the game draws to a close (The End Game). I saw cheating on a grand scale. Players with multiple accounts. The GF Meta alliance even went as far as to hack into a forum and obtain a username and password. They then used this password to login in to our World Wonder account, sending all our troops home and hitting it with a coordinated attack……I know I know…..sub-human scum.

Luckily for us the admins intervened, and the cheating GF swine’s did not succeed. I might point out that GF (Gamma Force) did win the server. However it was not through force of strength or conviction….it’s because they are called “Gamma Force” and obviously has super gamma mega powers…..Gamma Force…I mean really?…..spotty teenage gits ;)

The introduction of “Gold” in Travian in my opinion has the potential to spoil the balance of the game. From what I can tell, the end game may fast become a question of who is willing to spend more money to win!!!! Basically the system of gold works as follows. You purchase Gold with money from the Travian game developers.

You can then spend your gold to do the following:

  • Extend you Travian Plus account
  • Gain a 25% bonus to resource production
  • Gain a 25% bonus to Attack or Defense
  • Trade with the NPC merchant
  • Complete construction orders and Research quickly

Now from what I can see this introduces a new dynamic to the end game. This dynamic being the “spend a feckin fortune” factor that could see you getting huge bonus’ to everything. This does not sit well in my head as players are not really being rewarded for their actions…they are being rewarded for the frequency of their pay-pal transactions. It’s not a nice thing to see a good idea rush headlong into becoming something silly. I just hope the communities who have already embraced the Plus account do not turn to paying through the nose to get a tactical edge by spending “Gold” to beat the band!

  2. I disagree, travian is a complex game and there is more than one way to “skin a cat.” gold offersseveral advantages but it’s not as if you can just buy limitless resources or buildings. I think the developers have devised a way for players to get an edge witout making it ridiculous. I mean the game already favors the player who works at a computer all day and has limitless access at night as well. This is construed as “unfair ” by some players who can only afford ten minutes a day, so how is gold any different? As I said, Travian is a very complicated game where tactical smarts, diplomatic skills, luck, time and money all come into play. Thanks for the article, I found it well written and thought provoking… nick

  3. Thanks for the comment Nick, however I would not argree that time at a computer and gold can be seen as “edges” in the same light.

Firstly, I completely agree that the game favours users who can cover as much time as possible online. That said players who have little internet access during the day can organise sitters to cover their downtime. This will limit logging on to find your villages in ruins.

As for Gold, I recently was involved on an attack on a village that was “propped up” using gold. The guy would re-build his building as quick as I could cata them to the ground. So the game became a case of my cata speed vs his speed to enter his credit card details. You see my point about gold? I think the extras should be stripped out, with gold just giving you access to the plus account. Its quite obviously a ploy to extract more money from the travian masses (shame on the developers)

  4. Shame on the developers? You’re right, the people that spend so much of their time creating, maintaining, and moderating this FREE game world should not have the right to gain profits from it. I would much rather be overwhelmed with banner ads as soon as I log into my account. Be serious, the employees of Travian have created a product that is 1) quite popular, 2) well-known, and 3) fun, as most people that have played it will tell you. They deserve any money that players are willing to give them. As a purchaser of gold myself (spending about US$5 every couple months), I can tell you that it’s not a huge advantage. Rolling a Roman over a Teuton could give you a lot more advantages than a 25% increase in resource production (which, by the way, would cost about $6 a month, one hour worked at minimum wage, to maintain).

Back to the original topic, I agree that it’s a shame some people are willing to go to such lengths as “GF” to win the server, especially since there are really no tangible rewards to doing so. To be honest, if they want to work that hard to cheat and “win” the server and get such a reputation as they seem to have, then let them. After all, it is just a game.

  5. I’m seeing the travian “Golf Effect” is also in effect on Server 6 at the minute. Your are absolutly correct regarding the reward….there is NONE!

You can pour gold into a travian account and you get no advantages or edge for the next server if you win the previous one. You get pride, I hope its worth it ;)
