Scary Games

Filed under: General — Beefster @ 6:16 pm

From individual levels or scenarios to entire games themselves, there are alot of spine chillers out there!

I think my first taste of terror was the original Alone in the Dark on the PC. I had played it on a crock of a PC as we had to use the internal pc speaker and even then, it was scary. The whole occult, doom, terror, end of the world, devil stuff was so cool. And when you died in the game, your end of life sequence was a zombie placing your corpse on an altar of some kind. Which, incidently you discover later on in the game.

Even more recently however Fahrenheit is quite scary, with a jump factor of 7. As I posted before, it’s pretty much a movie that you have some control over. But the frights and the air of suspense make this a good spine chiller.

But my main reason for posting this is the Cradle Level on Thief : Dark Shadows. Oh my god. What a level. You spend 90% of your time on that level bricking yourself. The level itself is tricky, but the scariness of it adds to the difficulty no end. I have seen on forums that people constantly posting congratulating Eidos for making such a scary level. Some people have not been able to complete the level as it is so spooky. One incident in the game, when you’re in the attic, and the little girl appears out of the wall….I shat myself! Jump Factor 10

If you don’t have the game, go on out now and get it. Apart from the Cradle Level it’s a cracking game. Sneak here and sneak there, clubbing and stabbing unsuspecting medieval villagers!

  1. Another chiller was Doom3, I like in FPS games nowadays where you have a flash light and can only see where you point the thing. I remeber playing Silent Hill on the PS2 and your visibily was narrowed down to the small circle of light provided by the crappy torch. As you scanned walls to see blood and corpses hanging from hooks, it was all the more horrific!

  2. You will not be surprised to here that The Cradle was voted the scariest level also by the folks at PC Gamer. They too thought it was spine chilling….as did I.

I also found the level in the haunted ship quite scary in Thief 3….all the zombies walking around the decks.

Ranking up there with the Cradle for jump factor must be Aliens Vs Predator. I can still remember walking down the tight corridors of some wrecked colony only to have aliens spring from the shadows. And the first time I encountered a Predator was very scary. I ran into some sort of hanger….only to hear its cackle echo around (as I frantically scanned for either movement or a light distortion)……and then the 3 red lights of death settled on my forehead…and it was all over!

All great games. Have seen nothing like them of late. We need a new FPS asap (I hear talk that FEAR is good??). And for the love of god will someone make a new thief game with HDR technology enabled. The folks who developed Thief are grand masters at using light…….give them the ultimate tools!

  3. Well, FEAR for the short time I played it (only a demo) was a chiller. Your character is rendered like in Thief so you can see your shadows cast upon walls etc, I think that adds to the creepiness!

And that little girl appears at the most unexpected times…

  5. I find parts of Oblivion quite scary. Maybe im a wuss….but the vampire lairs are quite scary….even if the vampires themselves can usually be dispatched straight back to hell in 3 or 4 blows!

The mist that hangs in the corridors adds to the scary atmosphere…and the vampires that lie in wait using their invisibility….and suddenly pounce have caused the odd fright!

    Great game…cant praise it enough!!

  7. Chloe - If you have ever played the “Cradle” level in Theif Deadly Shadows you would not be saying that! It scared the be-jesus out of me!

If your not finding that scary there is something wrong with your definition of scary…or we are all wusses ;)
