DOD: Source, doing normal DOD justice!
The original Day of Defeat mod was excellent. We mostly played it using the excellent SturmBot plugin, which provided excellent Bots to populate your network games (for lack of real people!!) My only problem with DOD: Source is the lack of Bots, that said this is my only criticism.
The thing that made DOD great for me was the level design. Each map seemed perfectly balanced, the result being excellent firefights, and the ability to flank your enemy. In DOD: Source the excellent level design has been ported perfectly, with the levels playing and feeling like the originals, but looking much better due to the source engine. Anzio is excellent!!! The race to the small square and the charge up the alley (ducking in and out of doors) is classic DOD, but far more enjoyable with the added eye-candy and physics!
dod_avalanche was always a favourite, and is rendered beautifully in DOD: Source. I think the addition of HDR (Apart from looking great) adds another dynamic to multiplayer fps. When playing on Anzio I emerged from a tunnel only to be dazled by the sun…..and be cut down as I struggled to see my enemy! Might be an idea to turn it off!
I’ll have to give DOD:Source a 9/10. Loosing 1 point for the lack of Bots (We love Bots…..always ship a game with good Bots!!!)
