Dawn of War strategy guide
Have not posted in a while…..but since the beginning of makethisgame.com Dawn of War has always been around….so I thought I would put up a little post and try and get some people posting up their different strategies. Of late we have noticed that the calibre of player seems to have dropped quite a bit. Perhaps all the good players have moved on to greener pastures??? This should help get you up to speed:
Space Marines: A tried and tested strategy I always employ, and very rarely ever fails me! Build a scout off the bat followed by the infiltration upgrade. Have the scout en-route to a hiding space deep in the enemy base but away from the chapel barracks etc (to avoid detection). 2 more scouts should be used to take your points asap.
Build 2 more servitors, and rush build an extra chapel barracks and the armoury. Once the armoury is built begin your stronghold upgrade. Then spit out marine squads and take and hold the centre point of the map. Build nothing but dreadnoughts, DO NOT EVER BUILD Hellfire Dreadnoughts. Always leave your force commander in or at the entrance to your base to catch scouts. In the same vein patrol your own base with your librarian. Build as many turrets as you can at the front of your base as somewhere to fall back to should things go bad!! Remember to upgrade some of them with missles!!
Once your orbital relay is built start building/loading dreadnoughts. I usually have 2 dreadnoughts, and 2 full squads of terminators. I attach my force commander to one of the squads. If my scouts are still alive….as is usually the case….I send my entire army into the enemy base (attack move)
As your opponent deals with your frontal attack drop your forces in behind the lines. Do an orbital bombardment on his HQ and Bob’s your uncle. He will usually pull troops from the front lines to counter the new threat in the base…in which case push up to his base and that’s it!!! It works 9 times out of 10!!! If you al co-ordinate it is almost impossible to defend against.

Sounds good to me. Another good strategy for the Space Marines is to not overlook the usefulness of minefields. If you make a huge attack which fails, you can bet there will be a heavy counterattack, which will leave your base a nice pile of ash!!
But if your few remaining squads are fleeing to regroup, a few well place minefields can slow the enemies advances. Also they’re great at demoralising troops.
Another handy use is root out infiltrating scouts. There are several Commander units available to find infiltrators, but your main units can’t b everywhere at once, so a few minefields placed in a bottleneck area near your base, like a valley or a bridge, will surely expose the spies!

I was unaware that minefields could not be crossed by hidden scouts? If this is te case than this is an excellent way to hem them in! There is of course the eldar who can get in behind the lines with a webway….but this is easily countered.
I played a game recenltly. One of my team members picked the mighty Imperial Guard
However unlike previous games this lad was very good with them. Their secret lies in their ultra defensive nature. He basically turned this base into a fortress. He had turrets everywhere. Behind the turrets he had artillery laying down a wall of death on any approaching armies. Twice his base was attacked and twice he easily fought them off. In the meantime of course we had dropped hundreds of dreads behind their lines……it was easily won! I must give the IG a go some time!

yeah they are only good for Defense, I played a skirmish gamewith the Imperial Guard on Insane difficulty the other day on the Kaiser Lutien Map, it was a constant battle right on their bridge, that’s as far as I got, wave after wave of tanks, artillery and men and I could not get into their base, it was a constant war of atrition!
I ended up building a base there and putting up turrets to keep the enemy in their base. Then I realised that my two PC teammates had killed off the other 2 enemies and were on their way to my opponent. So at the end of it all, I didn’t actually kill him off. Killed 750 of his units though, I lost around 600.

Guard need good allies… but if they are at all rushed they are fecked.
Problem online is the QS games… hard to find a game where its not kayrs and no prism spam or oblites spam… set up maps with 1 or 2 relics per teams… everyone getting terminators and so on makes for bad balance. 3 eldar on kaysr is just stupid..(avatar hidden at back and 24 cap for vechiles!) very annoying

When I play with the guard (only once online mind you) I find the only way to hold your own is to build up tons of turrets. I get my hands on Kasakin troops asap and Lemann Russ tanks (They are the only decent unit the gaurd have). Usually 2 pieces of artillery, as many Kasakin squads + Lemann as you can get. The baneblade is a wate of time and resources….but it does look cool!

but the turrets cost so much early on…
and the russ takes so long to get…mind u when u get russes they rock! greatt unit that can change the tone of a battle.
gonna use more kasakin now though….

I build turrets around all the doorways to my base and that normally kills all the enemys.

Callum you must be building hundreds of turrets!!!
Once you can hold the middle of any map your usually on a course for victory, providing your enemy has not got scouts or webways in behind your front line.
Marching your force commander around should ensure this does not happen.
DOW is becomming a little stale for me……methinks its time for a new RTS title!

A-THOUSAND-CURSES - I would not be the biggest Chaos fan in the world…..but I know a few tried and tested Chaos tactics from my many hundreds of games playing!!!!!
PM Rush (Possessed Marine Rush) - back in the early versions (before the latest patches) this was a very popular tactic. build as many PM as quick as you can and simply overwhelm your opponents defences. The only defence now is artillery…scatters the marines and makes them completely ineffective.
I’ve played with quite a few players who use defilers to great success, using them in a line and bombarding as they move forward the new Chaos Predators are excellent with the plasma upgrade, they make short work of infantry and armour.
Just play the marines…they are far more rounded!

THANK U JUSTIN YES THESE R GOOD TACTICS BUT I WAS HOPING 4 NEW LESS OBVIOUS ONES I HAVE PLAYED WITH CHAOS 4 A LONG TIME AND NO THE STRENGTH OF POSSESSED MARINES AND DEFILERS.. HOWEVER ANY1 OUT THERE WITH MORE INDEPTH AND COMPLEX TACTICS PLEASE LET ME KNO……
AS 4 THE COMMENT ABOUT PLAYING WITH S.MARINES THEY R EASY 2 USE AND THERE 4 NOT MENTALY INGAGING ENOUGH AND I AM BORED WAST PLAYING WITH THEM (SORRY).
I PREFER THE MASS SLAUGHTER THAT ONLY CHAOS CAN PROVIDE…

Well the only other tactic I have seen……that when used properly can be lethal…is:
Jump into the base with a blood thirster, and then drop in full squads of Obliterators. The enemies base is usually in ruins by the time they can pull their army back……
I have recently started playing Eldar…..them fire prisms are excellent for killing men and machine…..and the ability to move full squads of warp spiders around the map in seconds is an excelent feature….it gives eldar a huge advantage over chaos!!!!!
