CryEngine 2, Crysis and the next generation of PC visuals.
Following the recent split between Ubisoft (publisher) and Crytek (developer), the Far Cry title has been in a state of limbo. It seems Ubisoft keep the name…..and Crytek keep the fabulous CryEngine that gave us the visual masterpiece that was Far Cry.
This said it was not visuals alone that made Far Cry great, it had some solid game play to back up all the eye candy. So are we to see a Far Cry 2? The answer is yes….however it will be called Crisis. The good folk at Crytek have teamed up with EA and will design, develop and release Crysis build using the new CryEngine 2.
For me Far Cry set a new standard in fps. It was the first really stunning game…where I was so wowed by the visuals that I almost forgot to shoot things. The early pictures of the CryEngine 2 are stunning. See for yourself:
Now having looked at them you can see what all the fuss is about!!!! Its stunning. If you have a look around the net you will find a video fo the tech demo….amazing stuff. Can’t wait for the game.

what!
OMG! they look uber.
Check out hellgatelondon…but bless FarCry people for 1 class game! pity about the last 2 levels(the silly crater was super gay)

Phonchoman is that a custom 3D engine….it looks excellent? Some of the monsters look cool. There is one screen shot of a sewer tunnel with this “thing” in it…….looks good.
Time to buy a new PC rig methinks, my computer is never going to play these new games. I was reading another review for Crysis stating that it should run optimised for lower spec machines (2ghz+ and a Radeon 9800+) Well if thats the case then I thin a lot of people are in trouble.

Phonchoman,
I’ve been looking at upgrading my rig in the next couple of months…but have decided to wait for the following reasons:
1) Both PCI express and Dual core are not long out on the market. This means teething issues and high price tags.
2) From what I grasp from dual core (and I am most probably wrong) is that it is excellent for multiple applications, such as having something rendering and playing a game with very little hit to the game, but the 2 cores combined for a game does not give huge leaps in perfomance.
3) Regarding Cross Fire, Cross Fire is only compatible with some “cross fire” motherboards, where as SLI is good to go across the board.
My advice for upgrading, dont ever buy the best of the best, because 6 months later it is mid range and the price has dropped quite a bit. Water cooling can be noisy as hell..and unless you are planning some serious overclocking should be avoided.
So I plan to squeeze the life out my Radeon 9800 Pro….but once the games hit the
