Battlestar Galactica

Filed under: Resource Management — Philip @ 11:09 pm

I have been thinking about Battlestar Galactica and it’s potential as a really cool resource management game. First of all does anyone know if there has ever been a game based on the Battlestar Galactica series and second of all was it a resource management game?

The reason i think this story would make a good resource management game is because the series is largely based around the continuing struggle of the crew to manage dwindling food and water supplies amongst others.

I became a follower of the latest mini series which i believe was a good attempt at making a remake of a classic show. There is something for everyone in there and it has plenty of potential. Not sure what is happening with it at the moment, the mini series was a big hit and as far as i know they are launching a new full series based on the formers huge following and popularity.

I would envisage this game being a multi dimensional experience where the player can choose to take a scouting ship out into the currently occupied solar system to hunt for much needed supplies. They may be lucky and turn up something nice or they may encounter a bunch of Cylon raiders hising on the dark side of a remote moon.

The player would also have the option of examining the overall state of the fleet and control the deployment of ships and resources accordingly. Sounds a bit “seen this before” but i think the option of varied involvement within differing levels of the space communities everyday life would make this an intriguing game.

  1. This is another good vehicle for an enjoyable game, but the terroitory was already coveered by the likes of home world. Although homeworld plaguerised the BSG concept, such as the destroyed planet and sacred legend of new home etc. Thats probably were it ended, as you had to build a new flotilla of ships in every mission!

However I think that micromanagement games are very biased towards younger users, particulaly the early teens who have the time, energy and motivation to care about what the cleaners in sub section b, deck 4, spaceship 3 had for breakfast. the older you get, the more you just want to delegate! bring back the golden age of build, order, build order, build order, upgrade, win. A strategic game, where you really on appointing the right personnal to command a post, cruiser, base or planet would be a new challenge, which perhaps the BSG game described above would be a great vehicle for. This would also allow a focus on diplomacy, as the welfare of the cleaners in sub section B really shouldnt be an issue to the leader of the remnats of a near extinct race.
