From individual levels or scenarios to entire games themselves, there are alot of spine chillers out there!
I think my first taste of terror was the original Alone in the Dark on the PC. I had played it on a crock of a PC as we had to use the internal pc speaker and even then, it was scary. The whole occult, doom, terror, end of the world, devil stuff was so cool. And when you died in the game, your end of life sequence was a zombie placing your corpse on an altar of some kind. Which, incidently you discover later on in the game.
Even more recently however Fahrenheit is quite scary, with a jump factor of 7. As I posted before, it’s pretty much a movie that you have some control over. But the frights and the air of suspense make this a good spine chiller.
But my main reason for posting this is the Cradle Level on Thief : Dark Shadows. Oh my god. What a level. You spend 90% of your time on that level bricking yourself. The level itself is tricky, but the scariness of it adds to the difficulty no end. I have seen on forums that people constantly posting congratulating Eidos for making such a scary level. Some people have not been able to complete the level as it is so spooky. One incident in the game, when you’re in the attic, and the little girl appears out of the wall….I shat myself! Jump Factor 10
If you don’t have the game, go on out now and get it. Apart from the Cradle Level it’s a cracking game. Sneak here and sneak there, clubbing and stabbing unsuspecting medieval villagers!
Have not posted in a while…..but since the beginning of makethisgame.com Dawn of War has always been around….so I thought I would put up a little post and try and get some people posting up their different strategies. Of late we have noticed that the calibre of player seems to have dropped quite a bit. Perhaps all the good players have moved on to greener pastures??? This should help get you up to speed:
Space Marines: A tried and tested strategy I always employ, and very rarely ever fails me! Build a scout off the bat followed by the infiltration upgrade. Have the scout en-route to a hiding space deep in the enemy base but away from the chapel barracks etc (to avoid detection). 2 more scouts should be used to take your points asap.
Build 2 more servitors, and rush build an extra chapel barracks and the armoury. Once the armoury is built begin your stronghold upgrade. Then spit out marine squads and take and hold the centre point of the map. Build nothing but dreadnoughts, DO NOT EVER BUILD Hellfire Dreadnoughts. Always leave your force commander in or at the entrance to your base to catch scouts. In the same vein patrol your own base with your librarian. Build as many turrets as you can at the front of your base as somewhere to fall back to should things go bad!! Remember to upgrade some of them with missles!!
Once your orbital relay is built start building/loading dreadnoughts. I usually have 2 dreadnoughts, and 2 full squads of terminators. I attach my force commander to one of the squads. If my scouts are still alive….as is usually the case….I send my entire army into the enemy base (attack move)
As your opponent deals with your frontal attack drop your forces in behind the lines. Do an orbital bombardment on his HQ and Bob’s your uncle. He will usually pull troops from the front lines to counter the new threat in the base…in which case push up to his base and that’s it!!! It works 9 times out of 10!!! If you al co-ordinate it is almost impossible to defend against.
The Endless Forest is an online screensaver with an optional game built in. You play as a Stag in a forest. The only interaction is through that as a deer. You can sniff, leap, bray and run around, chasing squirrels and other deer. There is no typing or ‘chat’ involved.
It’s a game with a difference, with no objective, no enemy or sawn-off shotguns. It has a hippy, earthy, pagan-ish feel to it. If you have 5 minutes that you don’t know how to use up, give this a try. It’s relaxing to say the least. It won’t keep you riveted for hours on end but it can be fun to prance around and dodge the falling leaves.
The graphics are actually excellent. They remind me of the forest levels from Neverwinter Nights. It’s a snip at 18meg, don’t forget to download the launcher if you want to “play” it aswell.
It is, of course, free. And quite a clever idea if you ask me. At last a game that can offer something else…the joy of being a deer!
