Why do we play computer games?

Filed under: General — Philip @ 12:18 pm

I was sitting on the DART(Public train in Dublin, Ireland) the other day on my way home and i was thinking about makethisgame.com. I started to also think about computer games why we play them and why they are so popular.

I know this is a bit deep after a days work but it was a nice switch in “train of thought” to end my day. I started thinking about why we like games that mimic reality so much? Why do we immerse ourselves in similar and alternative worlds to our own and in some cases carry out everyday tasks, SIMS for example. Are we trying to escape reality or simply like the feeling of control.

Why do we play games that simulate war situations? Do we secretly long to be in that bunker popping up every few seconds and hoping that bullet that whizzed by your ear wasn’t your last warning shot. Is it an interest in participating without the risk of serious injury? Probably.

What i am getting at is, i think the games we are interested in tells a lot about us as a person, from my own personal experience i found i like to play games where there is problem solving, adventure and and an element of science fiction involved. In “real life” i am a software engineer(problem solving), i love to travel(adventure) and i also love science fiction, i confess i’m a trekky and a huge fan of other similar science ficion shows.

Is it as easy as that to map your personality to the games you play, ill leave that one up to you . . .

Talk of LANs around the campfire

Filed under: General — Martin @ 11:52 pm

A fellow believer of Dawn of War spoke of a huge Lan taking place in Dundalk, Co.Louth (Ireland) This is a good sign, and shows that massive gamer networks are alive and well in the Emerald Isle. “Thanks be ta Jaysus”

I’m sick of seeing huge LANs in the States and Other Coalition countries, and I was delighted to be given access to www.dklan.com the hub of this huge Lan. I say it’s huge because it’s on for 14hours. Quite a gaming fest for any professional…

Numbers are max of 36 and at €10 a head, it’s reasonable. Well done to the boys for setting that up. Check out the site for further details!

However I was a bit perturbed at their game selection. Being an avid Dawn of War and Battlefield 2 gamer, I would urge the guys at dklan.com to introduce those two aforementioned works of art.

Although Call of Duty which was present, brought a war fuzzy feeling all over me. That was and still is, a strong runner for intense sweaty-armpit-inducing mayhem.

You heard it here…er second folks!!

Hunter Vs Battlefield 2

Filed under: Emulation — Philip @ 11:41 pm

While reading a post about Battlefield 2 i was reminded of one of my favourites from the Amiga. I don’t know if anyone remembers a game called Hunter? In this game, which sported some impressive “3D graphics” for the time, you went about various military style missions in a bounded 3D world.

What i really loved about this game was the freedom to use many types of vehicles from push bikes to missle laden helicopters. You had several different types of land and sea vehicles and even a hover craft which was the shit! I remember thinking at the time of release, WOW they could never top this game!

In a way i was right in a personal sense, as it still holds a warm fuzzy place in my heart. From what i am reading on Battlefield 2, maybe Hunter has met it’s successor and modernised a complete and utter classic, good to see.

Battlefield 2 revisited……

Filed under: FPS — Justin @ 1:39 pm

Having been a BF 2 player for a short time now, I feel it needs another word from me!

Firstly BF 2 is an excellent and robust game. Having read some of the posts on this site it is clear that PC games are too often rushed out the door in an attempt to maximise profit. Such haste leads to buggy games, that remove the feeling of immersion when playing a game (as you fall out of the level and into a black white grid!!)

BF 2 is solid. It has a perfect mix of fps carnage and vehicle based carnage. The vehicles are diverse and challenging to fly. There is a sense of accomplishment when you master a new mode of transport. This only opens up new areas of the game…as you can fly a chopper full of your friends around as they direct fire. I have never seen a game lend itself so well to totally uncontrollable unscripted and dynamic combat.

For me this is the essence of multiplayer gaming. All parts of this game work well together as a whole……….it is a marvellous achievement and well worth every penny. The already huge online community will ensure this one is here to stay….buy it now!
